CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

REVELATION CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN PREFACE

As we have already studied Babylon the Great thoroughly in Chapter 13, we need not take a great deal of time going through the material again. Briefly: the "woman" is "that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth" (Revelation 17:18); "that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth" is built on "seven mountains" (Revelation 17:9); the "woman" is "drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus" (Revelation 17:6); the colors of the "woman" are purple and scarlet (Revelation 17:4); the symbol of the "woman" is a "golden cup" (Revelation 17:4). So, there is no doubt about the identification of the "woman." We really don't have to "interpret" anything in the passage; we have a very good idea who this "woman" is!

Let's look a little closer at the Revelation 17.

"And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, mystery, Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns...Revelation17:1-7.

"And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.." Revelation 17:9.

"And he saith unto me, the waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. Revelation 17:15.

"And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth. Revelation 17:18.

"And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double. How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Revelation 18:1-7.

And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth." Revelation 18:24.

Interpretations:

"The great whore that sitteth upon many waters" = "the waters... are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues." Historical, what church can and does claim such "catholicity" among so many nations of the world?

"Having seven heads" = "the seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth". Which church, claiming global catholicity, is also situated at a city known for being surrounded by seven hills?

"No other city in the world has ever been celebrated, as the city of Rome has, for its situation on seven hills. Pagan poets and orators, who had no thought of elucidating prophecy, have alike characterized it as 'the seven hilled city.' Thus Virgil refers to it, "Rome has both become the most beautiful (city) in the world, and alone has surrounded for herself seven heights with a wall." Propertius, in the same strain, speaks of it (only adding another trait, which completes the Apocalyptic picture) as "the lofty city on seven hills, which govern the whole world." It's 'governing the whole world' is just the counterpart of the Divine statement - 'which reigneth over the kings of the earth' (Rev. xvii.18). To call Rome the city 'of the seven hills' was by its citizens held to be as descriptive as to call it by its own proper name." - Rev. Alexander Hislop, "The Two Babylons", pg 2.

"I will shew unto thee... the great whore...: and I saw a woman" = "The woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth."

"The Roman Catholic Church... in fact... has been deeply involved in the politics of Europe. When the Papal states existed (754-1870), these were as genuinely political as the kingdoms of France and Spain... The popes were unable to draw a real distinction between their spiritual sovereignty and their temporal sovereignty, and without scruple, it often seemed, they used the Papal States to support the authority of the church - or more frequently - the church to support the power of the Papal States. Many of the maneuvers can now be seen to have been abuses of power when that happened. This has meant that the structure of Roman Catholic power over the centuries took on the features of the political sovereignty normal in the Middle Ages and in early modern times." - Encyclopedia Britannica, 15th edition, 1984, vol. 15, page 986.

Furthermore, then, what religious system that is situated on a seven-hilled city, comes close to the claim of reigning over the kings of the earth, as the Roman Catholic church can? There are no Moslems, no Protestants, no Buddhists, no Hindus, THERE IS NO other religious sect of any "faith" or belief that comes close to claiming to have any influence over the kings of the earth, as does the Roman Catholic Church. No religious system in the world can be compared to this passage in Revelation as exactly as can the Roman Catholic Church.

See these references:

"The Roman popes not only based their claim to form and lead their own church state on a spiritual-secular judicial understanding but they also created a theocracy within areas that until then were part of the provinces of the Byzantine emperor. They renounced a number of former imperial rights and claimed them for themselves. They extended the secular claim of government of the church beyond the borders of the church-state and developed the so-called theory of the two swords, stating that Christ gave the Pope not only spiritual power over the church but also secular power over the worldly kingdoms." - Encyclopedia Britannica, 15th edition, 1984, Vol. 4, pages 511-512.

"The Apocalyptic emblem of the harlot woman with the cup in her hands was even embodied in the symbols of idolatry derived from ancient Babylon... for thus was the Greek Venus originally represented... the Roman church has actually taken this very same symbol as her own chosen emblem. In 1825, Pope Leo XII struck a medal with his own image on one side and a woman with a cup on the other side. On the side, which had the image of the woman, was written, "Sedet Super Universurn." The Latin meaning is "The whole world is her seat." In plain words, he struck out a medal with the image of a woman sitting on the whole world, and then his own image on the other side of it. The Catholic Church has already said that the teaching that a man is free to embrace and profess whatever religion he believes to be true is a false teaching. The Catholic Church claims the power of employing force and exercising direct power in regard to a man choosing his own religion. (This is Pope Pius IX's decree in "The Encyclical Letter and the Syllabus of the Eighty Errors," published in 1864, quoted by Peterson in "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Catholic Church," page 125.)

"It was a matter, therefore, of necessity, if idolatry were to be brought in, and especially such foul idolatry as the Babylonian system contained in it's bosom, that it would be done stealthily and in secret. Thus the people, wherever the Babylonian system spread, were bound neck and heel to the priests. The priests were the only depositories of religious knowledge; they only had the true tradition, by which the writs and symbols of the public religion could be interpreted; and without blind and implicit submission to them, what was necessary for salvation could not be known. Now compare this with the early history of the Papacy... and how exact was the coincidence!" - The Two Babylons, By Rev. Alexander Hislop, Loizeaux Brothers, page 7.

"As the Chaldean priests were believed alone to possess the key to understanding of the Mythology of Babylon, a key handed down to them from primeval antiquity, so the priests of Rome set up to be the sole interpreters of Scripture... The church in this way could shape its faith as it pleased. As possessing supreme authority, also, over faith, they could let out little or much, as they judged most expedient... as essential a principle in the system of Babylon, as it is in Romanism or Tractarianism at this day." - The Two Babylons, By Rev. Alexander Hislop, Loizeaux Brothers, page 11.

"Nimrod, the king and founder of Babylon, was not only its political leader, he was its religious leader also. He was a priest-king. From him descended a line of priest-kings- each standing as the head of the occult Babylonian mystery religion. This line continued on down to the days of Belshazzar of whom we read in the Bible... When Rome conquered the world, the paganism that had spread from Babylon and developed in various nations, was merged into the religious system of pagan Rome. This included the idea of a supreme pontiff (Pontifex Maximus), an office that began to be held by the Caesers in 63 BC." --Babylon Mystery Religion, by Ralph Woodrow, page 71.

"The Roman emperors (including Constantine) continued to hold the office of Pontifex Maximus until 376 when Gratian, for Christian reasons, refused it. He recognized this title and office as idolatrous and blasphemous. In 378, Demasus, bishop of Rome, was elected the Pontifex Maximus- the high priest of the mysteries! But how could a man be at one and the same time both the head of the church and the Pontifex Maximus, the head of the pagan mysteries? In an attempt to cover this discrepancy, church leaders sought for similarities between the two religions. They knew if they could find even a few points that each side had in common, both could be merged into one, for by this time most were not concerned about details. They desired numbers and political power. Truth was secondary. One striking similarity was that the supreme pontiff of paganism bore the Chaldean title Peter or interpreter- the interpreter of the mysteries." --Babylon Mystery Religion, by Ralph Woodrow, page 72.

Revelation 18:1-4 - "And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

Here in Revelation Jesus condemns the Roman Catholic Church, calling her, and thereby very specifically identifying her, by her very own ancient, and unique nickname and trademark: "the City of Seven Hills."

Obviously, then the Roman Catholic Church is the Great Whore mentioned in Revelations. See again - Revelation 17:9 "And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth."

There is no other city in the world that is known specifically as the city of seven hills as Rome is. And if that isn't enough, see Revelation 17:18 - "And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth." What other religion, known by the city from which it reigns, rules over the kings of the earth?

We have never seen Presidents, kings and Prime Ministers clamoring to any other religious leaders than to Rome, have we?

There is little doubt about it. The "woman" is Rome! It is the old Roman Religion that specialized in "mysteries" and is "unable to understand the Bible!" In Revelation 17:5 she is called "MYSTERY. BABYLON THE GREAT. THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH." (Compare Revelation 16:13 and Isaiah 57:3.)

Reference Scriptures:

Revelation 17:1,2 - And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

Compare 1 John 2:15 and Jeremiah 51:7. Our eyes should now be opened to the political shenanigans of the "great city" whose primary sphere is political. She may profess not to be political; she may profess to be "Christian." She may profess to be the "sole guardian" and "protector of the word of God." But her only religious activity, from the Bible standpoint, has been getting rid of born-again, Bible-believing Christians (Revelation 17:6). Her activity is mainly political, to find out more about the politics at the Vatican, see Paul Blanshard's book called "American Freedom and Catholic Power," or "The Two Babylons" by Hislop.

Revelation 17:3-7 - So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

Let us now see whom God connects with this adulterous, whorish, religious prostitute (who professes to be "Holy Mother Church"). Notice how similar this "beast" (Revelation 17:7) is to the one encountered earlier. In Revelation 12:3 there was a "red dragon" with seven heads, ten horns, and seven crowns. In Revelation 17, up shows a beast, which is "scarlet colored" (bright red), and there is no doubt who this beast is; he has seven heads and ten horns exactly as the one in Revelation 12. The beast is not Communism, as some commentators used to teach. In Revelation 12 we saw who the beast was. Revelation 12:9 "And the great dragon was cast out. That old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth. And his angels were cast out with him."

It should be very clear that he's the Devil, or Satan. If this connection is true then the Roman Church is a Satanic church, an imitation bride of Christ, an imitation body of Christ, and its leader is the "god of this world" - Satan!

John is marvelously shocked at this apparition. He would expect pagan Rome to kill saints and martyrs, as he was in exile at this time by pagan Rome for testifying for Christ. But John is looking into the future, and he has been caught up to the "day of the Lord" to see these visions, and he looks down at the professing church of Jesus Christ, the professing bride of Christ, and finds out that she's the foremost murderer of Christians! This is not pagan Rome. Why would John marvel about pagan Rome killing Christians when he was one of the ones they were trying to kill? The thing he is looking at is that great "mother of the faith" - Holy Mother Church. Can we not see what the Holy Ghost says she really is? She's a religious whore!! (See Revelation 17:1.) This is why the Roman Catholic Church does not like our Bible. The reason that the Roman Catholic Church tells its people that they cannot "understand the Bible" is because Revelation 17 tells the world that the "mother of the faith," "Holy Mother Church" is in reality a religious prostitute. Today for us to intimate that the Roman Catholic Church is not as good as other churches, we have many of Christendom that will come down on our necks!

At present, Rome's natural design for conquest is probably going to be against Britain. She has 12,107,000 square miles, over a billion people, and has indirect control over more than 8 foreign countries. What nation would Rome desire to get hold of more than England, and the English-speaking people, since English is the universal language?

Revelation 17:8,9 - The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

Watch it carefully. "The beast that thou sawest was, and is not." This is the Devil, and yet, this is the Devil in a certain type of manifestation. Here Satan, the dragon, is manifested as a man (compare Isaiah 7:10-15).

Revelation 17:10,11 - And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

Although the "beast" is Satan (the dragon), he also is a man who is Satan incarnate, and is called the "beast." (We have run into this man before in Chapter 13. (See comments there.)

"The beast that thou sawest was." Then he was a man (see Revelation 13:18) living on this earth. "And is not." This man was not living at the time that John wrote the Book of Revelation. "And shall ascend out of the bottomless pit." Then this man is coming back again. He is going to have a second coming just like Jesus Christ will have a Second Coming. When this man comes back, he "ascends out of the bottomless pit, and goes into perdition." Briefly: he is Judas Iscariot, now in the bottomless pit (see Revelation 11:7). He is the "angel of the bottomless pit," and he is a devil - not a human being. He has a Hebrew and Greek name (Revelation 9:11), he is from Kerioth, east of JorDaniel in Syria. He has Hamitic blood as a half-breed Syrian Jew. He is the Antichrist in the Tribulation, the Devil incarnate, the "son of perdition," that is now in the bottomless pit, comes out of it, and will go into perdition.

"And they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is" (Revelation 17:8).

He is not here, and yet he is. This is a "mystery" and the mystery is simplified if we would remember the mystery of the Satanic trinity. In Revelation 16:13 we learned that Satan had a trinity; the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet. (We cannot explain how Jesus Christ could be on the earth and in heaven at the same time, but He was; we cannot explain how God, the Father, was in heaven sending down God, the Holy Spirit, upon God, the Son, at the baptism [Matthew 3], but He did. Nor can we explain how the Antichrist, Judas Iscariot, is going to be the Devil incarnate, and yet, Judas is no longer on the earth [he's in the bottomless pit]. Yet the dragon [imitation of God, the Father] is here. Now the Antichrist, the beast, is gone, yet the beast is here, and the beast is the dragon [Revelation 12].)

"When they behold the beast that was (on the earth as a man), and is not (Judas is in the bottomless pit.), and yet is (The Devil is still operating, right here, right now.)."

He is not here, now, as the Antichrist; he's not here incarnate as the "son of perdition," but he's going to be. But the Devil is here now; the "beast" is at work. (We can see this every day when we read the morning newspaper!)

"And here is the mind which hath wisdom." This is said one other place- Revelation 13:18 - "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number" etc.

Revelation 17:10 - "And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come: and when he cometh, he must continue a short space."

"And." This is an additional statement, which means in addition to the "seven mountains" are "seven kings."

"There are seven kings." We discussed these seven kings when we discussed the seven heads on the dragon in Revelation 12:3. Briefly, these kings were:

  1. Nimrod, King of Babylon.
  2. Pharaoh, King of Egypt.
  3. Sennacherib, King of Assyria.
  4. Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon.
  5. Cyrus, King of Persia.
  6. Alexander, the Great, King of Greece.
  7. Caesar, King of Rome.

The Bible begins with the first kingdom in Genesis 10, and in the Gospels is found the last kingdom. Seven men are seven "heads" over these kingdoms. The only king that is not named in the Bible is Alexander, the Great, all the other kings are found by name. Alexander, the Great, is not found in Daniel, but he is given as the "rough he goat," and is identified as the Antichrist. Therefore, the Antichrist is the "King of Greece," and he is one of the seven heads.

"And there are seven kings: five are fallen." The five kings, who are fallen are:

  1. Nimrod, King of Babylon.
  2. Pharaoh, King of Egypt.
  3. Sennacherib, King of Assyria.
  4. Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon.
  5. Cyrus, King of Persia.

"And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one (Alexander, the Great) is, and the other (Caesar, King of Rome) is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space."

But that will not work! Rome is already in power, and at the time John writes, six kings have already come and gone. But look at the kingdoms again, and you will see that Babylon is listed two times. The first head was Babylon under Nimrod, and the fourth head was Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar. Let's count again, and this time count the two "Babylons" as one.

  1. Babylon under Nimrod is fallen.
  2. Egypt under Pharaoh is fallen.
  3. Assyria under Sennacherib is fallen.
  4. Persia under Cyrus is fallen.
  5. Greece under Alexander, the Great, is fallen.

"And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one (Caesar, King of Rome) is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space (3 years or 42 months)."

"Caesar" is the king at the time John writes these words. John is being persecuted at the time of this writing, 96 A.D., by Domitian, the Emperor of R-O-M-E!

There is going to be another king showing up after that, "and when he cometh, he must continue a short space."

Revelation 17:11 - "And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition."

"Even he is the eighth." He will be the king after Caesar, King of Rome.

"And is of the seven." He is the sixth head of Satan. Then the sixth head on Satan is the Antichrist, typified in history by Alexander, the Great, and unnamed in the Book of Daniel. His number is "666" and he was the "6th" head on the dragon. When he shows up, he will be the eighth king after the Roman Empire is complete. This means that when the Antichrist comes, he will take over the Roman Empire under the Roman Catholic Church (Daniel 2). As the ten toes of Daniel's image grow out of Rome (the legs and feet), so the ten kings of Revelation 17:12 reign with the Antichrist over a Roman Catholic Empire. And the beast, the Antichrist, is the eighth king that shows up, and he is one of the seven heads on the Devil.

Revelation 17:12 - And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.

These "ten horns" represent "ten kings," which are identical to the ten kings found in Daniel 2. The last empire on this earth, when Jesus Christ shows up, will be a ten-king kingdom; it is a federated kingdom of ten nations, composed of ten kings, and these are demoniac kings, as we learn from studying Daniel 2. The ten toes in Daniel's last kingdom, before Christ comes back, match the ten horns on the dragon of Revelation before Christ comes back.

"Receive power as kings." Notice that they do not have to have the title of "king," but that they "receive power as kings." They might be called "ambassadors," or "premiers," or "governors," but they have power "as kings."

Revelation 17:13,14 - These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

The picture will be complete when Jesus Christ comes back; the Roman Catholic Church will have revived the Roman Empire, and put all kings, governors, presidents, premiers, and ambassadors into subjection to the Roman Catholic Church, the Mother Prostitute, who sold the Bible out to get along with the world. (She is like a whore because she has sold herself for money!) The Roman Catholic Church, in order to gain control over the political kingdoms, sold Jesus Christ out and sold the Bible out. They sold themselves to be a worldly church, and thereby gained the favor of the world, which is why today they are the most powerful political force in the world. (See "Vatican Imperialism in the 20th Century" by Avro Manhattan.) For example: 50 nations have political representatives in the Vatican State, and nearly 20 more have been added since 1960. The Roman Church, as the filthy "woman" that she is, has courted the world for money, and the world has paid -- money that will ruin that church. That church has been corrupted by spiritual fornication with this world (Revelation 18:3; 17:2,4; 3:20,22). (The same old "woman" is found destroying the work of the Body of Christ with her "leavened doctrine" in Matthew 13:33.)

As the Devil comes down and takes over, as Judas Iscariot's spirit comes up from the pit and enters into the Roman Catholic pope (sitting on Satan's seat, speaking "ex-cathedra"), he will gather unto him ten kings. These ten kings will be demoniac fallen angels (giants, if you please), and they will take over the entire earth and put the entire earth under the iron heel of the Roman Catholic Church. That's the handwriting on the wall!

We're told in Revelation 18:4,5: "Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities." At this juncture, Jesus Christ shows up (Revelation 17:14).

Revelation 17:15 - And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

Notice, then, that our first water birth, as a natural person, puts us into the great pool of waters of "peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues." This is not the sea, but waters. Our first birth is a water birth. (See John 3:3-6.) We're made like a mud pie, out of red clay (see Genesis, Genesis 1:26, 27; 2:7) and water. The earliest Man is supposed to have been Pithecanthropus, represented by the Java Man." He supposedly gradually evolved from Tarsius, through the Hominoids and Great Apes. What a blue blood line! As someone has so aptly put it:

"Once I was a tadpole when I began to begin,

Next I was a frog with my tail tucked in.

Then I was a monkey in banyan tree,

And now I am a doctor with a Ph D!

Tadpole, frog, and monkey man,

All GLORY to nothing for the planless plan!"

Revelation 17:16 - And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

"Shall eat her flesh." These demoniac kings are cannibals. We could say, "If the 'woman' is only a picture of the Roman Catholic Church, then they can't eat the flesh of Roman Catholics." But, the teaching is there! For example: it is the Roman Catholic Church that has its Sunday morning "mass," an act of cannibalism where the communicant eats up Jesus Christ. The gist of the passage is that after the Devil gets complete control with his ten kings, he will turn against Rome and destroy her. (This will probably take place in the middle of the Tribulation. We can't be too sure about the time element because "Babylon the Great" doesn't come up for her judgment until the end of the Tribulation [Revelation 16:19].)

Some commentators get around this by saying that the commercial Babylon of Revelation 18 is not the same as the ecclesiastical Babylon of Revelation 17. They say that the Antichrist, with his ten kings, destroys the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical system in Revelation 17. But the actual destruction of the literal Babylon does not occur until the end of the Tribulation - Revelation 18. They may be right. The Bible does speak of the re-building of Babylon in Zechariah, but it is a little farfetched. It is farfetched, mainly, because Babylon is not built on seven mountains, it is built on a plain. Also the Babylon of Revelation 18 is not only a commercial city (see Revelation 17:6; 18:24). The destruction of Babylon is not merely the destruction of a political city that has riches, it is the destruction of a spiritual abomination (Revelation 18:3-6). Her sins are spiritual sins against God, which is why Revelation 17 is identical with Revelation 18. There is no reason for heaven "to rejoice" over a commercial city falling, and yet, heaven does rejoice in Revelation 18:20. Again in Revelation 19:2 heaven rejoices about the destruction of Babylon.

At any rate, we see in Revelation 17:16 that the ten kings hate this "woman," "MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT," and they make her desolate and naked, and they "burn her with fire." This doesn't quite match the destruction of the literal Babylon in Revelation 18:21, where Babylon is described as drowning like a millstone (See Jeremiah 50:3,28 - Jeremiah 50-51 deals with this subject).

Revelation 17:17 - For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

"For God hath put in their (the ten kings) hearts to fulfill his (God's) will, and to agree (to get together with the Devil), and give their kingdom (this ten-king federated kingdom) unto the beast (the Devil, instead of to Rome) until the words of God shall be fulfilled."

Revelation 17:18 - And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

Cities are likened to women in Joshua 17:11. This city (Rome) was originally called "Saturnia," city of Saturn. "Saturn" means "lying hid." "Lateinos," the Greek word for "Latin" means "the hidden one." Rome, then, is the great "mystery" and its priests are the great ones for purple robes, beads and bells, confessional booths, candles burning, lights out, etc. Anything but the unadulterated word of God!

Revelation 17 teaches clearly, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that when Jesus Christ comes back and lands on this earth at the Battle of Armageddon, He comes to attack and destroy Satan incarnate, reigning with ten kings, over a ten-king federation. This federation is most likely connected with Roman Catholic system that, though, professing to be Christian is in reality nothing but a Godless ecclesiastical whore.
