CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

REVELATION CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN PREFACE

It appears that Revelation 18 is a continued description of Revelation 17 - that is, it is a reference to Rome. The references are both to an ecclesiastical power, which Rome is, and to a commercial and political power, which Rome also is. However, there is some ground for dissenting on this, and some very able Bible students and scholars make a distinction between ecclesiastical Babylon (Rome - Revelation 17) and the rebuilding of a literal Babylon at the site of the former city of Babylon. Their scriptural proof for this is Zechariah 5:5-11, where the scriptures speak about the rebuilding of the wicked city (typified by a woman), that is to be built in the land of Shinar. (See Genesis 10, there "Shinar" is the plain upon which ancient Babylon was built.) So because of this, some believe that a literal Babylon is going to be rebuilt by the Euphrates River, which empties into the Persian Gulf. The authors of the current best seller, "Left Behind" series take this position.

There are a number of reasons why we should take both of these chapters to speak of Rome, and Rome only. First, they are probably the same city because Babylon is built on a plain, and not on seven hills (Revelation 17:9). It is not just an ecclesiastical system because we are told in Revelation 17:18 that it is "that great city." In Revelation 18:24, we are told that in this city "was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth." No one has yet shown how Babylon, the original city, was responsible for "all the slain upon the earth." We might be able to understand how a religious system could be, but not the ancient city itself. Therefore, Revelation 18 appears to be a city, and the city is Rome. Now whoever crucified Jesus Christ is directly or indirectly responsible for the shed blood of every, saint or martyr who ever lived. If the sins of Old Testament saints were atoned for by the shed blood of Jesus Christ, then whoever shed His blood has the blood of those prophets on their hands. Whoever shed Christ's blood is responsible for every Christian who died for the next 2000 years, because the saints in the Church Age were "chosen in Him before the foundation of the world." For this reason, both Revelation 17 and 18 seem to refer to the Roman system.

Now notice the characteristics of this city:

    • It is a filthy city (Revelation 18:2);
    • It is a drunken city (Revelation 18:3);
    • It is a commercial city (Revelation 18:19);
    • It is a pagan city (Revelation 18:4);
    • It has a "cup" (Revelation 18:6);
    • It is a proud city (Revelation 18:7);
    • It is a popular city (Revelation 18:9);
    • It is a mighty city (Revelation 18:10);
    • It is a rich city (Revelation 18:12);
    • It is a doomed city (Revelation 18:21);
    • It is a city under the curse and wrath of Almighty God (Revelation 18:5).

This is a perfect description of Rome, and there is not one other city on the face of the earth that would meet all these requirements. There are thousands of cities on a map of the world, and out of these there is only one city that is rich, mighty, popular, mystical, doomed, damned, commercial, cursed, filthy, drunken, pagan, and proud, that is built on seven hills, whose symbol is a cup, whose colors are purple and scarlet, who kills Christians, reigns over the kings of the earth, and is responsible for the blood of prophets and saints. There is only one - ! All roads lead to - !

Reference Scriptures:

Revelation 18:1 - And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

These events do not necessarily follow what we read in Revelation 17 and Revelation 16 about the doing away of this "woman," as there is a reference to Babylon falling in Revelation 16:19, and here again it seems that the scriptures are going back and repeating the same material.

Revelation 18:2 - And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

Notice the connection of "devils," "foul spirit," and "unclean and hateful bird." Unclean spirits are like birds. When the Holy Spirit comes down in Matthew 3, He is seen in the form of a dove - a clean bird. Unclean spirits are like unclean birds throughout the word of God.

Matthew 13:19 - "When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side" (compare Matthew 13:4).

Here Satan is likened to the fowls who steal the word of God.

Matthew 13:31,32 - "Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof."

Notice that the mustard seed represents "worldly faith" which is called "mother faith" (the faith of Roman Catholics), attracts demons. Of course, most denominations including Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Catholics teach the parable as follows:

"The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed (i.e., Faith, this is true.), which a man took, and sowed in his field (i.e., the world, this is true): Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree (i.e., their church), so that the birds of the air (i.e., their brand of "Christians") come and lodge in the branches thereof."

Can "birds of the air" be Christians?! The "birds of the air" seem to be demons. When we read in Ecclesiastes 10:20, "For a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter," this seems to be talking about spiritual communication, intuition, and the parapsychology of demoniac spirits in the realm of extra-sensory perception. Fowls of the air and unclean birds, especially, are likened to demons - they are not likened to Christians.

Revelation 18:3,4 - For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

"My people" is a reference to the Jews, but some make this a spiritual application to the Christian and say that the Christian needs to come out from Rome. Of course, this is the sense in which Martin Luther took the passage, and this type of exposition was typical of the beginning of the Reformation. But the original context, Jeremiah 51:5-7, is a reference to Israel getting away from Rome in the end-time, because Rome is going to turn against the Jew and wipe him out. (Of course, at the present time, Pope John is now making overtures to the Jew, but we must not forget that the Antichrist goes further than that. He makes a peace treaty, and signs a covenant with the Jew, and then breaks it [Daniel 9:27]. We shouldn't kid ourselves. Whenever a Roman Catholic College of Cardinals, or church, or priest, or bishop makes an agreement with the Protestants or Jews, they make it with their fingers "crossed" under the Jesuit proposition that "the end justifies the means." Under the particular philosophy that Loyola taught, any Roman Pope can promise life, liberty, peace, and tolerance to a Protestant or a Jew, and kill him within a year with a clear conscience. [We need to really understand Jesuit theology! There are thousands of martyrs that understand this theology. Would they could speak!] The Roman Catholic teaching is that as long as it is for the glory of God and the Roman Catholic Church, it is right - even if it is a lie! No Roman Catholic is obligated to tell the truth if it will hurt his church. This was apparent in the case of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. We don't get the real story of this from "The Day Lincoln was Shot," by a pro-Roman Catholic writer. We should give some diligent study to "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Catholic Church," by Peterson, which has an objective account of Lincoln's assassination, and from it we will get an insight into what actually took place. A Catholic can lie with a clear conscience if it will honor God and glorify the church. That's the Jesuit teaching.)

The verse in Revelation 18:4 is addressed to Israel, directly, during the Tribulation. Of course, indirectly, it can refer to anybody who is a member of the Roman Catholic Church. That is, "get out and get out as quickly as we can!" (That's the thing the Catholic priests hate - Christians who proselyte people from their church. Priests hate Christians who witness to Catholics to try to show them the errors of the Babylonian prostitute. This is why they say, "You've got your religion and I've got mine. I won't bother you, and don't you bother me." What he really means is that he is terrified of the truth, and is hiding behind a refuge of lies, and can't stand to be exposed.)

Revelation 18:5,6 - For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.

Compare to Revelation 17:4. This is the vengeance of God coming - "Give her back twice as much as she gave you."

Revelation 18:7-14 - How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her. And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more: The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men. And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.

The fruits which Rome lusts after begin with "gold" (Revelation 18:12) and end with the "souls of men" (Revelation 18:13), the last item on the list. Rome is first interested in gold and she has the least interest in the souls of men.

The big Roman holiday "Christmas" is a commercial revival; "Easter" is a commercial revival. This big Roman system is built entirely on the commerce and trade of nations, promoting marriages (with no birth control) so as to raise big families perhaps to sell them baby carriages, milk bottles, diapers, clothes, and to get cars, houses, etc. for them. That is, the high standard of living in countries around the world, and the low standard, are due to the commercial activity that accompanies the teachings of the Vatican State. (This is the Western world, because the Orient has another alibi.) The world that falls under the influence of so-called "Christianity" is set up on this commercial foundation.

The first interest is gold, the second is silver, and the last one on the list is the souls of men. This explains why no Catholic "priest" ever attempts to win a soul to Jesus Christ; he always tries to convert a family to the Roman Catholic Church. The only time a Catholic priest ever tells a man how to be saved is in "extreme unction," during an act of contrition, on the death bed. Then he's safe. In plain words, it is a dirty, rotten trick to delay telling a man until he is on his deathbed the plan of salvation (the Roman Catholic "extreme unction" - which is a real prayer for salvation which works!) But the Roman Catholic priests never give this to the man until he's just about gone. That way he has no life of "liberty under the Holy Spirit," no time to study the word of God, no way to be used of God, and no way to expose the rotten, corrupt, religious outfit that kept him in bondage until the day he died! Instead, he has to beg friends and family to pray him out of purgatory. Given the time and opportunity, he will have his "death room" adorned with Catholic prayer books committing the last hours of his life to Mary! If possible, he will acquire a sample of "healing water" from Lourdes, France or any other "blessed site" hoping, praying that it will miraculously heal him! He will wear the Scapular which when worn will save the wearer from the fire of hell! In other words, his life ends with all trappings of Roman Catholic superstitions! Where is the peace that passeth all understanding?

Revelation 18:15-19 - The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

This is the lament of Rome's allies - United State, Spain, Mexico, Italy, the United Nations, NATO, etc. They are probably upset and disturbed because the commercial system is all shot, and the bottom has dropped out of the "global stock market.

Revelation 18:20-22 - Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her. And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;

Compare the term "craft" with the Antichrist and "craft" in the following reference:

Daniel 8:25- And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

Also see these verses:

Daniel 11:43 - But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

Jeremiah 50:28 - The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance of his temple.

Revelation 18:23,24 - And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

The verse interprets itself.
