REVELATION CHAPTER SIX

Reference Scriptures:

Jeremiah 30:7 - Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble, but he shall be saved out of it.

Daniel 12:1 - And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

CHAPTER SIX PREFACE

To repeat what we have learned, the church in Revelation 4 has been raptured up into heaven, and it is up there with the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ has stepped forward and taken the book with the seven seals. He now begins to open the seals in the book. As each seal is opened, the events that follow take place on the earth below. (What follows in Revelation 6-19 is called "Daniel's Seventieth Week" in Daniel 9 which we have just studied in our last lecture. It is also called "the time of Jacob's trouble" in Jeremiah 30:7, and "the time of trouble" in Daniel 12:1. This is that unparalleled time in which Israel will be persecuted and the race will be wiped off the earth, down to 144,000 people.)

These unparalleled, catastrophic events and cataclysmic judgments that are going to come upon this earth begin after the Rapture of the church. The Body of Christ is caught out, thank God, and sometime thereafter (we're not given the exact time element), these events begin.

Revelation 6:1 - And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

"One of the four beasts saying, Come and see." The "one of the four beasts" turns out to be the first beast, by what follows. The first beast is a lion (Revelation 4:7). So, the lion said, "Come and see."

Notice it was the LAMB that broke the "First Seal." Then the first, or "Lion-like Living Creature" cries with a voice of thunder--"COME." John had no need to "come" for he was already there. The command then of "Come" was to the "Rider" of the White Horse.

Revelation 6:2 - And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

Who is the "Rider" upon this White Horse? He is not Christ, as some claim, for Christ, as the LAMB, is holding the "Seven Sealed Book" and breaking its "Seals." Christ does not appear as a White Horse Rider until Revelation chapter 19:ll-15, when He comes with the armies of Heaven to engage in the Battle of Armageddon. Then He is called "Faithful and True," and on His head there is a many "Diademed Crown," and He is clothed in a vesture dipped in blood, and His name is called the "WORD OF GOD," and there is no weapon of warfare in His hand, but a sharp sword comes out of His mouth, and the effect upon His enemies will be swift and terrible.

This "white horse rider" is the most controversial figure in scripture. Now if Revelation 6:2 is a reference to Jesus Christ -which the majority of Christian enominations along with the Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah Witnesses, etc. teach that it is - then He is now a king (there's the crown in the middle of the verse); He is now conquering (there it is at the end of the verse); and this means that "the kingdom" is gradually spreading as Jesus Christ conquers this earth!

This is the teaching known as "Post-Millennialism," taught by Augustine (5th century), Eusebius (4th century), and Origen (3rd century) between 200-500 AD, and it is the same theological and ecclesiastical falsehood that has corrupted and defiled the face of this earth for 1500 years. It is the teaching that "things are getting better." It is Darwin (19th century) in the church.

This teaching is the cause of more wars than you can count, for if man is "getting better" and "the kingdom" is coming on this earth, then no matter how big a war we have, we can always say that man is getting better from these wars, and learning more, and becoming more "human" all the time. We can also say that the Kingdom is nearer now than it was and that these wars have helped to bring it about. But, mainly, we can say that "Christ's church" should be getting more and more power over the earth, since Christ is gradually conquering the earth as a king. If Christ is a king conquering the earth, then the church with Him is gradually conquering the earth.

If the rider on the white horse is Jesus Christ, then this world is getting "better and better" as Christ "gradually conquers" it. Why would anybody think that this rider was Jesus Christ? Every theological seminary that teaches that it is Jesus uses another passage in Revelation to prove that it is. Turn to Revelation 19, and you will find the passage that is used by many commentators to prove that the white horse rider of Revelation 6 is Jesus Christ.

In Revelation 19 there is a rider on a white horse, and about this white horse rider, there can be no doubt; this rider has a name which is "Faithful and True" (Revelation 19: 11). He is called the "Word of God," in verse 13. He is "King of kings and Lord of lords," in verse 16. There is no doubt about the Lord Jesus Christ in this passage. Since He is on a "white horse" (Revelation 19:11), He is naturally lined up with the rider in Revelation 6:2, and some religious leaders say that they are both the same. This is typical of the careless exegesis for which many commentators are guilty.

In Revelation 19:11 we are told that this "white horse" comes out of heaven. In Revelation 6:2 we are told nothing of the kind. In Revelation 19:12 you are told that the white horse rider has many crowns. In Revelation 19:15 you are told that the white horse rider has a sharp sword. In Revelation 6:2 you are told that this white horse rider has a bow. In Revelation 19:14 you find the white horse rider followed by the armies of God. The white horse rider in Revelation 6:2 is followed by "Death," "Hell." and "famine"! This accentuates the fact that the Book of Revelation is not hard to understand, it is hard to believe.

Now, there is only one man in the Bible who is so much like Christ that he could fool hundreds of commentators and seminaries into thinking that he was Jesus Christ. If there is a man in the Bible who is so much like Christ that some people think that he is Christ, do we know who that would be?

Well, it wouldn't be Paul. Paul preached to Gentiles and Jesus preached to Jews. If there is any man in the Bible that would really "imitate Christ," it would be Satan. Most people think that Satan is a two-horned, red-tailed being. They don't realize that in spite of his real nature that God knows and sees, he appears to people as "an angel of light." In the Bible he is the highest power in the universe outside of God. He is such an exact reproduction of Jesus Christ that we couldn't tell them apart, except by the leadership and guidance of the Holy Spirit, if they were standing side by side. Now, to understand this, lets look at the scriptures:

1. Jesus has a city who is a bride (Revelation 21).

Satan has a city who is a bride (Revelation 17).

2. Jesus said, "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12; 9:5).

Satan is called an "angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14).

3. Jesus Christ is called a "King of kings" (Revelation 19:16).

Satan is a "king over all the children of pride" (Job 41:34).

4. Jesus Christ is called the "Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6).

Satan is called the "prince of this world" (John 14:30).

5. Jesus Christ is called "my Lord and my God" (John 20:28).

Satan is called "the god of this world" (2 Corinthians 4:4).

6. Jesus said to Satan, when tempted by him, "It is written" (Luke 4).

Satan quotes the scripture right back to Him, "It is written," and quotes part of Psalm 91:11 (Luke 4).

7. Jesus is called "the Lion of the tribe of Juda" (Revelation 5:5).

Satan is called "a lion" (1 Peter 5:8).

In plainer words, the most perfect imitator of the Lord Jesus Christ is Satan himself!

Coming back to Revelation 6:2, this white horse rider has some connection with Satan; there is no doubt about it. War follows him in verse 4;famine follows him in verses 5 and 6; Death and Hell follow him in verse 8. In verse 9, he is found killing people who believe the Word of God. His ministry winds up in verse 17, with the great day of God's wrath. What do you suppose could possess some scholars to believe that Revelation 6:2 was a reference to Christ "gradually conquering" when the rest of the chapter refers to Death, Hell, famine, and judgment?

This "Rider" has a "bow," but no arrow is mentioned, and he is not crowned at first, but a crown will be given to him later, the "Stephanos'' or "Victor's Crown," as a reward for his victories which are prolonged and bloodless. This is the picture of a brilliant, strategical, and irresistible conqueror, whose victories will dazzle the world, and elevate him to a leadership that will place him at the Head of the Ten Federated Kingdoms of the revived Roman Empire. As a subaltern, like Napoleon I, he will rise from the ranks until a crown will be given him. His triumphs will be due to his skilful diplomacy. Like Antiochus Epiphanes, his prototype, he "will come in peaceably, and obtain the Kingdom by flatteries." Daniel 11:21. As the "Tool of Satan" he will be endowed with wonder working powers, and when he comes, he will find the world ready to receive him, for God will send upon its inhabitants a "strong delusion" that they will believe a lie, or "the lie," for that is what he will be. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-11.

In other words this White Horse Rider is the ANTICHRIST. He is the "PRINCE WHO IS TO COME" of Daniel's Vision of the "Seventy Weeks," and who will confirm the Covenant for "ONE WEEK," the last or "Seventieth Week," with Daniel's people the Jews. Daniel 9:27. This Covenant will probably be the privilege to return to Palestine (they did, May 15, 1948!) and rebuild the Temple and re-establish their sacrificial form of worship (they haven't YET!), and national existence, in exchange for the financial assistance of the Jewish bankers of the world in his schemes of establishing world wide commerce, and the formation of a gigantic corporation. Its commercial center will be in the rebuilt city of Babylon, so that no one can buy or sell unless they have his "MARK," (the "Mark of the Beast," Revelation 13:16-17), for we are told in Daniel 8:23-25, that "through his policy also he shall cause CRAFT (manufacturing and industries) to prosper in his hand."

The rise of this White Horse Rider necessarily antedates the beginning of the "Seventieth Week," or the "Seven Years" of his reign, for he must have reached a position of power to make a Covenant with the Jews at the beginning of the "Week," but he does not become "The Beast," as described in Revelation 13:1-8, until the "Middle" of the Week, that is, until after Satan is cast out of the Heavenlies and incarnates himself in him. His rise to power and the rebuilding of Babylon will take time, so the Rapture of the Church will doubtless antedates the beginning of the Week by some years.

But while the establishment of the Antichrist's power will be comparatively peaceful, that peace will be short-lived as is evident from the breaking of the "Second Seal."

This "White Horse Rider" will be Satan's "SUPERMAN." The Scriptures clearly teach that there is some day to arise a human being who shall be the embodiment of all Satanic power. He will be known as the "WILFUL KING" because he shall do according to his own will. He will be the Czar of Czars. He will have no respect for sacred things or places. He will cause a throne to be erected in the Most Holy Place of a Temple that the Jews will build at Jerusalem, and, seating himself upon it, he will proclaim himself God, and men will be commanded to worship him; and Satan will give unto him his power and his seat (Throne) and great authority. All this will be fully brought out under the "Sixth Personage," the "Beast Out of the Sea," in Revelation Chapter 13.

Revelation 6:3,4 - And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

There is no need to tarry long with this SEAL. When it was broken John heard the second, or "Calf-like Living Creature" say, "Come," and a "RED HORSE" appeared and went forth, whose Rider was given a "GREAT SWORD," and who had power to take peace from the earth, and cause men to kill one another. The symbolism is very clear. Red, the color of the Horse, is a symbol of BLOOD, and the Sword is a symbol of WAR. The time is clearly that prophesied by Christ--"And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars…for nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. Matthew 24:6-7. This seems to imply that the Antichrist will not have everything his own way, and that his Autocratic methods will lead to insubordination and civil wars among the nations under some great leader represented by the Rider of the Red Horse, whose "Great Sword" is symbolical of the awful destruction of human life that will follow.

This is a fulfillment of 1 Thessalonians 5:3. "When they shall say PEACE and SAFETY; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape." We learn from this "Seal" that wars are likely to break out at any time and that there will be no peace on the earth until the return of the "Prince of Peace."

Revelation 6:5,6 - And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

When the "THIRD SEAL" was broken John heard the third or "Man-like Living Creature" say--"Come," and a "BLACK HORSE" appeared and went forth, whose Rider held in his hand a "pair of balances," and John heard the voice of an invisible person in the midst of the "Four Living Creatures" say--"A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny, and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine." The "BLACK HORSE" signifies famine, and the Rider the "Conserver of Food." When all able bodied men are drafted for war, and no one left to sow and harvest the crops, then famine is sure to follow. So great will be the famine, that it will take a "denarius" a day's wages, to buy a "choenix" (2 pints) of wheat," the daily ration of a slave.

What is meant by not hurting the oil and wine, is not really known but may be, that as the Olive tree and grapevine do not bear their fruit until some months after the wheat and barley harvest, and grow without much attention, their crops would not be so much affected by war, and therefore the Olive trees and grapevines were not to be ruthlessly destroyed by invaders for they were needed for medicinal purposes.

Revelation 6:7,8 - And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

When the "FOURTH SEAL" was broken John heard the fourth, or "Eagle-like Living Creature" say--"Come," and a "PALE HORSE" appeared and went forth. Note the "corpse-like" color of the Horse. We are not surprised then when the Rider upon the "PALE HORSE" is called "DEATH," and that "HADES," the "Grave," not "Hell," follows after "Death" like a great "Voracious Monster" to swallow up the victims of "DEATH." It is worthy of note that the Riders of the first three Horses are not named, but it will be very clear when the events they chronicle occur, who and what is meant. Here however the Rider is personified and called "DEATH," and his consort is called "HADES," they are inseparable companions.

This is a particular type of person because, although people are getting killed in Revelation 4, the name of the one on this pale horse is "Death." Then this is a definite person. Notice, Death personified with a capital "D." Then, in the Bible we'll find an angel whose job is "killing" or "death," an angel to whom this power has been delegated. God delegates the power of death to Satan in Hebrews 2:14. Sometimes God gives permission for Satan to take a life, and sometimes He does not. The actual execution is carried out by one of the angels of Satan, who has a special name: in Revelation 9:ll we will find that the name of this angel is "the Destroyer." (It is indicated by two words, one in the Hebrew Abaddon, and one in the Greek - Apollyon. Both words mean "perdition" or "destroyer." The word "Apollyon" is the same word found in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 for the "son of perdition," exactly as we find it in John 17:12.) This is a particular death angel entrusted with this job, Death personified, and hence, he is often cartooned as an old man with a sickle, riding on a pale horse.

Now this is rather hard to take literally. Yet, in the passage, "Hell" is capitalized and personified, as though the inhabitants of hell were spued out on this earth during this last half of the Tribulation. For example, in Revelation 9:1-13, it is quite apparent that the inhabitants of the bottomless pit come up.

This brings up the weird thought - if a Christian is like his Father, and receives a body like his Savior at the Second Coming (which he will, 1John 3:1-6), it stands to reason that the unsaved will receive a body like their father at the Great White Throne Judgment. Their father, however, is a red dragon, a serpent, a red worm (John 3:14, Revelation 12:9). This red worm ("their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched"), is in either language a red maggot. It brings upon one's mind the fearful apprehension that the final state of the wicked is, perhaps, Darwin in reverse! Instead of Darwin being right in thinking that man came up from amoeba, planaria, and paramecium into the jellyfish forms, and the fish, serpent, and worm forms, into the mammalia and vertebrae forms, that man is returning back to the lower forms by degeneration. Man's ultimate and final state, after bragging about becoming like God, he will possibly wind up as a red maggot in a lake of fire (Psalms 22:6, Isaiah 66:24)! (It is impossible to teach this as an absolute doctrine from the word of God, but it is interesting!)

Revelation 6: 9-11 - And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

Now, coming into the second half of the Tribulation down on earth, John sees under the fifth seal "an altar," and under this "altar" the "souls" who have been slain for the word of God, for the "testimony that they held." (Compare this with John's own position in Revelation 1:9, which would indicate that the Book of Revelation is primarily to the people in the Tribulation.) These martyred people, who have been killed, are pictured as "souls." Notice that they have voices, memories, and a body that can wear a white robe. This brings up one of the most radical, Revolutionary Bible doctrines found anywhere in the word of God. The passage reveals that a "soul" is not like a croquet ball, or a tennis ball, or a baseball, stuck away in your body somewhere. A soul is a bodily shape that is shaped exactly like the "body of flesh." The soul, being the seat of the emotions, is a bodily shaped, invisible type of "ghost." Hence, the Lord Jesus Christ in the believer would be "the Holy Ghost." Paul says, "Christ formed in you" (Galatians 4: 19). The soul has arms, legs, eyes, ears, nose, throat, mouth, lips, teeth, tongue, back, jaw, stomach, and "the works." In Luke 16, the rich man in hell had a tongue, eyes, voice, and yet his physical body was buried in the grave. There is no argument at all about "the grave." The Bible clearly teaches that the physical body goes to the grave and rots. Hell is not the grave, and the grave is not hell. In Luke 16 the body is not in hell, the body is in the grave. The soul is in hell.

This soulish body (with a bodily shape) is an invisible body that cannot be seen. It is referred to as an "Astral body" among Rosicrucians. The psychiatrist refers to it as the "ego" or the "I am." But we must never forget that the word "psychology" is a Greek word compound- "psyche" meaning "soul," "logia" meaning "knowledge" or "wisdom." The "soul," in the Bible, has a bodily shape, and it leaves the body at death. (We'll find this reference in Genesis 35:18 when Rachel died; her soul "was in departing.") It was what Paul referred to when he said, "The time of my departure is at hand" (2 Timothy 4), and "Having a desire to depart and to be with Christ, which is far better" (Philippians 1:23).

The Bible teaches that man has a body, soul, and spirit. The body is a physical thing which you can see (Greek - soma). Inside this is a soulish body that fills out the regular body, and is invisible. This soul is filled with the "spirit of man," which is a dead spirit derived from Adam, and it has no life in it until it is breathed upon by the Holy Spirit, "That which is born of the Spirit is spirit." Before you were saved, you were "dead in trespasses and sins" (Ephesians 2:1-4). All this tallies everywhere with the word of God. For example, Jesus said, "No man hath seen God at any time," referring to the soul of God. Then He said, "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father," referring to the body. We find all three of these apparent in Matthew 3 when the Lord Jesus Christ is baptized. In the last three verses you will find the Father in heaven (the soul), the Son on the earth (the body), and the Spirit (the Holy Spirit) communicating between the two. God, being God, is a trinity who can divide Himself without dying. Man, being a trinity cannot split himself without dying. This is why James says, "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also" (James 2:26).

We have a case in the Old Testament of a soul leaving, and then coming back into a man (1 Kings 17:22). The man was actually declared dead, and then he returned, as we find it in "modern science." (The case in the Old Testament is several thousand years ahead of the best medical science.) The Bible then reveals something unknown to the physical scientists, and there is nothing in parapsychology, logotherapy, or psychosomatics that could come anywhere near the correct truth of the matter. The truth of the matter is that every man is built like a volleyball. He has an outside leather cover (his body), he has an inside rubber inner tube (his soul - the same shape as the body), and if he is saved he is filled with air (the Spirit). See 1 Thessalonians 5:23. He's a "flat tire" if he is unsaved. He is not a complete man until he is "born of the Spirit." Look at Genesis 2:7. "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground (body), and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (spirit); and man became a living soul (soul)."

The soul, then, is a spiritual body - a spiritual body within a physical body. (If we threw a sheet over it, it would appear as a "ghost." Hence, the translation "Holy Ghost" in the Bible is correct. The Spirit is like air or wind (John 3:6-8), and only refers to that Spirit which fills a container. The soul (or the "ghost") is the container and the Lord Jesus Christ dwells bodily within the believer, as well as spiritually.

Now, John saw these souls that were slain, under the altar. These souls had a voice, they could wear clothes (they had a bodily shape), and they were killed in a certain manner. Notice: "Their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed AS THEY WERE." It is a particular kind of a death. This death is called "the death" in Revelation 12:11. This particular kind of death is clearly given in Revelation 20:4, as follows:

"And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls (Revelation 6:9) of them that were beheaded." They had their heads cut off! Decapitation is the final form of capital punishment under Papal Rome, exactly as it was under pagan Rome in the time of Paul. James, the brother of John, had his head chopped off with the sword (Revelation 12). In Romans 16:4 Paul said some saints "have for my life laid down their own necks." Paul, himself, was beheaded at Rome. Capital punishment in the final days will be by decapitation by a sword or an ax. This is the standard Roman method, and the Roman lictor had the ax there where you could see it, for the purpose of capital punishment the rod was for beating them and the ax for cutting off their heads. My! How civilized we are getting! Wasn't Darwin great? Isn't it strange that the last form of capital punishment isn't the gas chamber? Or hanging? Or the electric chair? Or any such humane measures? The last form of death on this earth is decapitation. Exactly like the Chinese would do it in Vietnam.

"And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain." This altar is plainly a literal temple (as a passage is always literal if it can be literal). We are unwise to spiritualize any passage, or make it figurative, if it can be literal. For example, turn to Revelation 11:1,2. Here we will find there is a literal temple, a literal court, and a literal altar on this earth at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In Matthew 24:15 we will find the "holy place" in the literal temple, and something standing in it. In 2 Thessalonians 2:3-8 we will find a literal temple with a literal "holy of holies," and somebody sitting in that temple professing to be God. All attempts by many commentators to spiritualize these passages are weak attacks on the word of God a fight with the Holy Spirit. The Bible clearly teaches that a literal temple will be on this earth at Jerusalem, with a literal "holy place" and "holy of holies" in it, with a literal Devil seated in there professing to be God, with a literal altar outside this temple, and (horror of horrors), people being beheaded as sacrifices at this altar for the worship of Satan.

These souls have been sacrificed at an altar, near a temple, by having their heads cut off. Now, if there is any doubt about this interpretation, check Leviticus 1 and 2. Here you will find that all sacrifices have their heads cut off (Leviticus 1:8,15). They are decapitated. This altar (Revelation 6) is not the earth itself. This is a literal altar (Revelation 8:5; 11:1-3, 2 Thessalonians 2:3-8). These souls have been sacrificed to the Antichrist, who at this time will be in the temple "showing himself that he is God." The martyrs are on the earth under the altar, in an intermediate state, as we find in the Old Testament (Luke 16:22). (In the next chapter, we find them up in heaven - Revelation 7:9-14.) The same thing applies to another group. In Revelation 7 we come upon 144,000 who are on the earth: the same company is found up in the third heaven in Revelation 14:1-4.

This means that people who are killed in the Tribulation get raptured sometime before the end of the Tribulation. (As I pointed out before, the first resurrection has three parts:

1. The "catching up" of the Old Testament saints at the resurrection.

2. The "catching up" of New Testament saints at the Rapture.

3. The "catching up" of the Tribulation saints just before the Second Advent at the end of the Tribulation.)

The martyrs who have their heads cut off, in Revelation 6 are up in the third heaven in Revelation 7, and the 144,000 that are on the earth in Revelation 7 are up in the third heaven in Revelation 14, clearly indicating a Post-Tribulation Rapture. This is not a Post-Tribulation Rapture of the church. This is a Post-Tribulation Rapture of Tribulation saints, specifically Jewish saints, as you'll find it in Matthew 24:29-31.

Revelation 6: 12-17 - And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

When the "SIXTH SEAL" was broken John tells us that there was a "Great Earthquake," and the "sun became black as sackcloth of hair," and the "moon became as blood," and the "stars of heaven fell to the earth," and the "heaven departed as a scroll," and "every mountain and island were moved out of their place." It will not do to say that these things prefigure and symbolize the overthrow of the Powers of the Earth by great social and political convulsions. These are nothing more or less than great physical convulsions that shall shake the earth, and that have been foretold by the Prophets and by Christ Himself. Such physical phenomena and changes have happened before. We must not forget the "GREAT DARKNESS" that for 3 days overspread Egypt in the days before the Exodus (Exodus 10: 21-23), nor the "DARKNESS" that settled over Jerusalem and Calvary on the day of the Crucifixion of Christ. Matthew 27:45.

The Prophet Zechariah speaks of a day that shall not be "clear" or "dark," and he associates it with an earthquake at the time of the return of the Lord. Zechariah 14:1-7. On May 19, 1780, there was in New England what is called in history the "Dark Day." It was not an eclipse of the sun, yet it was dark enough to make the stars visible, and the chickens went to roost. The cause of that darkness has never been explained. In the prophecy of Joel we read--"I will shew wonders in the heavens, and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the lord come." Joel 2:30-31. In Isaiah 13:9-10, we read--"Behold the 'DAY OF THE LORD' cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate, and He shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light, the sun shall be DARKENED in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine." In Isaiah 34:4 we read--"All the host of heaven (the stars) shall be dissolved and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth from the vine, and as falling fig from the figtree." This corresponds to the "stars of heaven" of this "SEAL," and probably refers not to the constellations and heavenly bodies (stars), they are too far away to be affected by judgments on the earth, but to our own atmosphere, and to "meteors" and "shooting stars," similar to the "shooting stars" of November 13th, 1833, when they fell for 3 hours during the evening, and so terrified the people that they thought the end of the world had come. These physical convulsions will be the earth's "travail pains" as she labors to bring forth the new creation of the Millennial Age. Christ refers to this period in Matthew 24:29, where He says--"In those days shall the sun be darkened (that is, its light obscured), and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens (the Principalities and Powers of the Heavenly Places (Ephesians 6:12), not the Powers and Kingdoms of the Earth), shall be shaken." All these startling physical changes and convulsions will cause a great fear to fall upon all classes and conditions of men (7 classes are named), who will no longer attribute such changes merely to natural law, but will see the "HAND OF THE ALMIGHTY" in it all. To them the "DAY OF JUDGMENT" will become a reality, and in their fear and terror they will hide themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains, and say to them--"fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the 'wrath of the lamb,' for the great day of his wrath is come, and who shall be able to stand?" What a prayer? Instead of repenting and crying for Salvation, they will call on the mountains and rocks to bury them from the sight of the Almighty.

At this point it will be interesting to compare Christ's "Olivet Discourse" (Matthew 24:1-30), with the "Six Seals" of Revelation 6:1-17. The similarity between them is most striking, and proves that the author of the "Olivet Discourse" foreknew, in the "Days of His Flesh," in their exact order, the things that shall come to pass in the "Day of the Lord." This is indisputable evidence of the Deity of Jesus.

The Threefold Question

    1. When shall these things be?
    2. What shall be the sign of thy coming?
    3. And of the end of the World (Age)?

Answer to the First Question

Matthew 24:4-5

4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

First Seal

False Christs

Revelation 6:1-2

1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

Matthew 24:6-7a

6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7a For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:

Second Seal

Wars

Revelation 6:3-4

3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.

4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

Matthew 24:7b

7b and there shall be famines,

Third Seal

Famines

Revelation 6:5-6

6 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.

6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

Matthew 24:7c-8

7c and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

Fourth Seal

Pestilence and Death

Revelation 6:7-8

7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.

  1. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

Matthew 24:9-13

9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Fifth Seal

Martydoms

Revelation 6:9-11

9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

Matthew 24:14

14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

The Gospel now being preached is the :Gospel of the Grace of God."

Acts 20:24 - But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

Answer to the Second Question

Matthew 24:15

15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

The Sign of the "Desolator"

Daniel 9:27 - And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Matthew 24:16-22

16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

The "GREAT TRIBULATION"

Answer to the Third Question

Matthew 24:29-30

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

The "Fig-Tree" Sign

Matthew 24:32-35

32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Revelation 6:12-17

12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
